Often referred to as the “gateway to the San Juan Islands,” the city of Anacortes on Skagit County’s Fidalgo Island was for many years more of a takeoff point for other destinations than a destination itself. Things though have changed for this city of around 16,600 people. While visitors on their way to the San Juans still pass through town in a steady stream, more and more have been discovering the charms of Anacortes Homes For Sale and Anacortes, WA real estate.
Linked by bridges to the mainland and the south-lying Whidbey Island, you don’t have to hop on a ferry to get to Anacortes, WA real estate. Despite the easy access, however, Anacortes can still feel like a quiet retreat.
Incorporated in 1891, the city was established years earlier by Amos Bowman. The city’s name, Anacortes, is a modified version of Anna Curtis, his wife’s maiden name. The history of Fidalgo Island itself stretches back further than that, however. Native Americans have been inhabitants of the island for more than 10,000 years and today there’s a Swinomish Reservation on the southeastern side near the town of La Conner.
A working port town that has also become a retirement and relocation hotspot, the Anacortes of today is a mix of marinas, residential neighborhoods, manufacturing sites, green spaces and a charming, historic downtown. The population is equally varied – Anacortes, WA real estate is home to everyone from boatbuilders and employees of the city’s two refineries to craftspeople, retirees and young families.
